When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven! – Matthew 16:13-21
Who is Jesus? Maybe you have asked yourself this question at some point in your life. This is probably the most important question any man or woman could ever ask. In fact, this is the question Jesus asked His disciples. This question is so crucial because if you miss Jesus, then you miss the Kingdom. Which is why many religions have sought to answer it. Islam says that Jesus was a good prophet. Mormonism teaches that Jesus is the spirit brother of Lucifer and was the first creation of Heavenly Father. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus is Michael the archangel. Atheists and agnostics range from viewing Him as a good moral teacher to some doubting He even existed.
However, I find the person of Jesus to be incredibly fascinating. You see, Jesus had no formal training as a rabbi. He had no degree. He never held a political office. He never had a wife or family of His own. He never traveled more than 200 miles His entire life. He was the son of a carpenter and only lived for 33 years. His life ended when He was betrayed by His friends and killed by His enemies. One would look at His biography and wonder why this person would even be mentioned throughout history. Why indeed. Why do we all know His name?
Maybe it is because Jesus is much more than just a man. There is no other name that is more well-known throughout history than Jesus Christ. This one man changed the world forever. Instead of conquering nations and governments, He conquered hearts and minds. Instead of taking life, He offered His own. The small Jesus movement in Jerusalem thousands of years ago has become the largest movement in all of history. The only person that could accomplish something like this would have to be God Himself. And that is exactly who Jesus of Nazareth claimed to be. He said that He was the Christ. The Son of the living God. The Word who became flesh. The messiah. The one who gives sight to the blind, speech to the mute, and healing to the sick. The one who raised the dead. The King of kings and the Lord of lords. The Alpha and the Omega. The beginning and the end. The wonderful counselor. The teacher. The redeemer. The bread of life. The light of the world. The door. The good shepherd. The way, the truth, and the life. The resurrection and the life. The true vine. The savior of the world. Who is Jesus? He is the God-Man.
