For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. (Psalm 5:12)
Sometimes, we feel all alone, like we are standing without help or comfort or direction. We feel surrounded by just ourselves, only us and our struggles, and this creates a gnawing loneliness in our soul. Though we may literally find ourselves surrounded by those who care about us, who offer help and comfort, we still seem alone. We are surrounded, and all alone. In those moments we may be burdened with a deep hurt, a vexing question, a besetting sin. Whatever the reason, we feel all alone in the middle of a busy, crowded life.
The good news is that such dark nights of the soul cannot change what is really happening to us. Yes, we are surrounded, but it is never just ourselves, our struggles, our hurt, our confusion. Rather, we are surrounded by the favor of God. Even when God seems far from us, He is right there with us, surrounding us with mercy, grace, strength, and the promise of never leaving or forsaking us.
Our feelings change. Our circumstances swing from good to bad, from happy to sad. Our confidence rises and falls. Our friends and family are close and far. The only constant, it seems, is change. Yet, God never changes. He is with us, standing as our help and comfort and direction. God surrounds us with His favor. Indeed, we are surrounded.
